Buy Now or Wait? The Best Times of Year to Buy Everything

A month-by-month guide to when major categories hit their real lows, with the inventory-cycle logic behind each one.

The most expensive shopping habit I had in my twenties was buying the right things at the wrong time. I paid $1,100 for a mattress in April 2018 that the same retailer sold for $680 six weeks later, on Memorial Day weekend. I still think about that $420.

Retail pricing is not random. Every category has a natural low point on the calendar, driven by inventory cycles, model-year transitions, and tax-accounting quirks I never understood until I started watching the patterns. People who know the calendar pay 20-40% less than people who don’t. This post is my calendar, month by month.

The question to ask before any non-urgent purchase isn’t “is this on sale?” It’s “am I inside the window where this category is cheapest?” If yes, buy. If no and you can wait, waiting almost always pays.

One caveat. These ranges come from years of watching retail, not a promise about any specific product in any specific store. A deeper-than-usual discount can pop up any month, and a flagship launch can briefly wipe out a seasonal low. Use this as your default, not your only rule. January is when fitness gear finally gets cheap

Two patterns dominate January. One I love, one I’m neutral on.

Fitness equipment goes on real sale because it’s resolution season. Retailers compete hard for new-year gym quitters who want a home setup instead. Treadmills, exercise bikes, and strength equipment run 15-30% below November pricing. January is also when last year’s models get cleared for spring inventory.

Bedding, linens, and towels have been on a “white sale” calendar since John Wanamaker started the tradition in 1878. Not marketing folklore — a real, continuous thing. January and February remain the two cheapest months of the year for sheets, comforters, and bath linens at department stores.

TVs in January are a weird case. The absolute best TV prices hit in November (Black Friday) and February (Super Bowl pre-game). But January sees meaningful clearance on prior-year models that didn’t sell during the holidays. If you want a top-end TV and don’t care about the 2026 model, January is one of the top three buying windows of the year.

February is the Super Bowl month for TVs

TVs, again. The Super Bowl is the single largest driver of TV sales in the US. Retailers run hard promotions in late January and early February to catch upgrade buyers. Mid-range and large-format TV prices often match Black Friday, sometimes beat it slightly. I bought my current living-room TV in early February 2022. The same panel had been $200 more in December.

Winter clothing. Jackets, boots, sweaters, and cold-weather gear all hit end-of-season clearance in February. Markdowns of 50-70% are normal. The trick is buying a size up for kids who’ll grow into it by next winter. I was wrong about this for years — I kept buying on-size in November, then buying again the following November. Buying ahead in February cut my kid-coat budget in half.

Chocolate. Day-after-Valentine’s clearance on February 15 is one of the great frugal moments of the year. High-end chocolate at 50-75% off. Stock up.

March is a sleeper month for cameras and luggage

Luggage. New collections from Samsonite, Travelpro, and Away typically release in April for the summer travel season. That means March is when last year’s models get discounted. Expect 20-40% off the prior collection.

Digital cameras. The big camera brands announce new bodies in late winter and early spring. Outgoing model prices drop in March as retailers clear inventory. If you shoot DSLR or mirrorless as a hobby, a previous-generation body is almost always identical in image quality for a fraction of the launch price. My Sony body is two generations old. I bought it in March 2023 for $1,150; launch price was $2,000. The photos are fine.

Frozen food. March is “National Frozen Food Month” in the US grocery industry. The trade association that coined it backs the term with real promotional budgets, so grocery chains run heavier coupons and store promotions on frozen goods all month. If you have a chest freezer, this is your stock-up window.

April is spring-cleaning season for retailers too

Vacuums and floor care. Spring cleaning is the biggest marketing window for vacuum manufacturers, and retailers compete hard on brand-name and private-label units. New models typically launch in fall, so April vacuums aren’t outgoing inventory — they’re just heavily promoted to catch a predictable seasonal wave.

Spring appliances. Grills, patio furniture, and outdoor gear all hit their first round of discounts in April. Deeper discounts come in late August and September when the season is ending, but April is the cheapest window if you want to use the thing this summer.

Tax software. TurboTax, H&R Block, and FreeTaxUSA all run heavy promotions in the first two weeks of April, targeting last-minute filers. If you still need tax software, prices hit their annual low right before the filing deadline. Stressful timing. Doesn’t change the pattern.

May is mattress month, and this matters more than you’d think

Mattresses. The calendar’s single biggest fact. Manufacturers traditionally release new model lines in June, which means Memorial Day weekend is when retailers clear the previous year’s inventory. Discounts of 30-50% off are normal, and every major brand runs a Memorial Day event. Memorial Day or Labor Day are your windows; Memorial Day is usually slightly better for selection.

I lost $420 in 2018 not knowing this. If you’re about to buy a mattress in April because it feels like spring, wait six weeks. You’ll thank me.

Small kitchen appliances. Blenders, food processors, stand mixers, and coffee makers all see Memorial Day promotions. Brands use the holiday weekend to push inventory before the summer slowdown. Discounts run 20-30% off, sometimes more on older models.

June is for tools and sofas

Tools. Father’s Day is the second-biggest promotional window for tools after Black Friday. Power tools, tool sets, and hardware bundles all see real discounts. If you’re a DIY-er expanding your kit, June is a top-three window.

Men’s apparel. Same logic — Father’s Day drives it. Dress shirts, ties, polos, and casual wear all get heavier discounts through mid-June.

Indoor furniture. Summer is the slow season because consumer attention shifts outside and toward travel. Retailers respond with clearance pricing on sofas, dining sets, and bedroom furniture from mid-June through July. 20-40% discounts are common. If you’re redoing a living room, do it in early July when nobody else is thinking about furniture.

July belongs to swimwear and Prime Day

Swimwear. By mid-July, retailers have already ordered fall inventory and need to clear summer stock. Bathing suits hit 40-60% off, and selection is still decent for late-summer vacations.

Summer clearance. Sandals, shorts, outdoor toys, and seasonal items across the board start their end-of-season markdowns in late July.

Amazon Prime Day. Mid-July is typically Prime Day, Amazon’s manufactured shopping holiday. It’s a good sale on Amazon-branded hardware (Echo, Kindle, Fire TV) and a mixed bag on everything else. Worth watching for your wishlist items, but be skeptical of “original prices” on deals that appear for the first time that day. Inflated reference prices are the dominant trick of the event. August is back-to-school, which means laptops

School supplies. Very cheap in early August through Labor Day. Notebooks, backpacks, and basic electronics all hit annual lows.

Laptops for students. Back-to-school is the second-biggest laptop promotional window after Black Friday. Apple, Microsoft, Dell, and HP all run targeted student deals. If you qualify for education pricing through a .edu email, the discounts stack. My nephew got a MacBook Air in August 2025 for $849 — student pricing plus bundle plus trade-in for his old iPad. Full retail was $1,099.

Outdoor furniture. Late August is deep-clearance time. Patio sets, umbrellas, and grills can drop 40-60% as retailers clear floor space for fall goods. Selection by that point is thin. If you find a unit that fits, grab it.

September is for cars and bikes

Cars. September is when dealers clear current-year models for incoming new-year inventory. Dealer and manufacturer incentives stack — rebates, 0% financing, and larger-than-usual negotiation room on outgoing stock. If you’re flexible on trim and color, September is a strong window. December is better (see below), but September has better selection.

Bicycles. End of cycling season in most of the country. Bike shops and sporting goods retailers discount hard. Prior-year models drop 20-40%, and accessories follow.

October is the deepest grill clearance of the year

Jeans. October is historically the cheapest month for denim, driven by back-to-school-adjacent promotions extending into early fall.

Gas grills. The deepest grill clearance runs late September through October, when warm weather is over for most of the country. Discounts of 50%+ are common on floor models. Selection is poor, but if you find one that fits, the savings are huge. I bought my Weber in October 2021 for $340. Sticker was $699.

November is Black Friday, which you know, but

Black Friday doesn’t need an introduction. The points worth making for 2026:

Laptops, TVs, headphones, and small appliances hit their annual low during the week of Black Friday. For TVs specifically, it’s the best week of the year for most models, narrowly beating February Super Bowl pricing.

Cyber Monday has converged with Black Friday into a week-long event. The best prices often show up on the Wednesday or Thursday before Thanksgiving, not Friday itself. I’ve watched laptop prices drop Wednesday, hold flat Friday, and creep back up by Cyber Monday on the same model.

What to skip buying on Black Friday: toys (December post-Christmas clearance is better), winter clothes (January clearance is much better), and anything with a “doorbuster” price that’s a stripped-down model built for the sale. If the SKU only exists during Black Friday week, it’s not a deal. It’s a product.

December is the cheapest car-buying month of the year

Cars. December is the cheapest month to buy a car, period. Dealers are under end-of-year quotas, manufacturers offer year-end incentives, and leftover current-year inventory needs to move before the calendar flips. The last week beats the first week. If you can buy on December 30 or 31, do. I know someone who bought a Honda CR-V on December 31, 2023, for $3,400 under the sticker negotiated in early December. Same dealer, same car, three weeks apart.

Toys. Post-Christmas clearance, December 26 onward, hits toys hard. If you can shop for next year’s birthdays in advance, this is it.

Champagne and wine. Post-New Year clearance on sparkling wine in the first week of January overlaps with late December inventory reduction. Decent bottles hit 30-40% off.

When to ignore this whole calendar

Three cases override the calendar.

  1. You need the thing now. A broken washing machine doesn’t wait for Memorial Day. Buy it, stack a coupon to soften the blow, move on.
  2. A deeper-than-seasonal discount appears. If something you want is 45% off in March and its seasonal low would typically be 30%, take March.
  3. The product is about to be discontinued. Some outgoing models get pulled from shelves entirely before their seasonal clearance window, especially in electronics.

For everything else, wait. Impatience is the most expensive habit in retail. I know — my mattress bought me the lesson.
